Am I stupid?

Okay, so I realize that may be a loaded question and one I should be careful asking, but... here goes.

Yesterday while at work, I had a patient come to my consultation window to ask a question. I ask, "How can I help you?" He says, "You can tell me what's in this bottle." Most would think that he may have an unidentified tablet or capsule... a logical question to ask a pharmacist. Nope! In this clear glass bottle that would hold about an ounce if it was full appeared to be some dark, brown stains. That's it. So when I ask him, "Do you have an -idea- what it might be?" He says something like, "Well I had a friend that was a chemist that called it a 'hot shot'. He would put a drop of this into a student's pop and then it suddenly they'd get a mouth feeling like it was on fire."

So then I ask him some questions:

"Do you have any idea of what that was called?" "Where did your chemist get this, the lab? a pharmacy?" "Why do you need to know?"

While we are talking, he proceeds to stick the opening of the glass bottle up his left nostril to see if he can smell it! Then he licks his finger and swipes it across the top of the jar and licks it!

First of all, common sense and chemistry class has taught me to never sniff a chemical. Always waft it. Second, you certainly don't TASTE an unknown compound. Oh and did I mention he said he thought the bottle was probably fifty years old?!?!? Third, I certainly wasn't going to do anything with that bottle having seen it up his nostril.

Then he asked me how he could find out what was in it. I said something short of a forensic lab or a chemistry lab with mass spec equipment, I had no idea. "I certainly didn't have the tools here."

And he left... as quickly as he came. But the memory lingers...

I am cheating a bit on it. I'd like to see if my non-Facebook readers can see these pictures via this link.

Let me know how it works out. :)

Mikayla's One Year

Today, Mikayla had her one-year appointment. Here is how she measures up:

Weight 20 pounds 7 ounces (50%)
Height 30 inches (75%)
Head circumference 46 cm (100%)

She does have a bit of a hiney yeast rash as well as an ear infection. You'd never know though.

Hope all is well and pictures will be soon to follow (I hope).

Love,
Angie
